About Me

I am many things: an Associate Lecturer at the University of Lincoln, a laboratory technician for an East Midlands renewable energy site, and a private tutor for GCSE and A-level pupils. When I’m not working, I’m usually found hiking in wild places or riding my motorbike.

Should you wish to contact me, you are welcome to reach out by sending a message on LinkedIn or via email. It would be great to hear from you!

Teaching has allowed me to practise and experience pedagogy; at its best, the correct approach is employed and the student-teacher relationship is a complete pleasure, and at its worst, finding a new angle to capture the intrigue of the student presents a novel challenge.

My philosophy is that for every student there is a best way to teach a concept. I have found that the formulaic teaching practised in schools often falls short of this ideal for at least one person in the class. Concepts, mathematical concepts especially, come as pre-packaged facts by the National Curriculum, precluding the richness of history, art and fascination of the mathematical sciences.

Instead, I coach my students that the mathematics and physics, are humanist subjects which sometimes have unclear answers and almost always require an element of creativity. More important than getting things right is to learn how to ask Socratic questions, question our assumptions, and to build habits to last a lifetime.

I like to keep my lessons as relaxed and friendly as I can! To make sure that lessons run smoothly, I have to have some basic guidelines.

In general, I expect my students to,

  • Ask me plenty of questions.
  • Take notes.
  • Be prepared with the correct equipment.
  • Let me know of assessment results.
  • Keep things appropriate.

I expect parents to,

  • Ensure that their child arrives on time with the right equipment.
  • Let me know if their child is experiencing difficulties that could impact lessons.
  • Be present during the sessions if the student is under the age of 18.

  • Keep my appointment and arrive on time.
  • Be well prepared and take any resources needed for the lesson
  • Keep track of their progress and highlight any issues.
  • Inspire them to enjoy science and mathematics.
  • Improve their confidence and standardised test scores.
  • Respect their rights to data privacy and never share any identifiable information about them.
  • Frequently assess them to monitor their understanding.

I’ll communicate with the main point of contact by WhatsApp or email, usually. And, I can be contacted during my normal working hours, which are between 09:00 and 17:00. You can expect a reply within 24 hours at the latest.

I generally don’t do online lessons as a matter of preference! However, if we do agree to working online, then before your lesson, I will share a link with you so that you can access the online meeting room, which will usually be on Google Meet. I’ll also take a phone number so that, just in case the internet connection drops out during the lesson, we can still hear each other over the phone.
